Whilst actively engaged in a movement having for its object the social and economic emancipation of the working class, Christian Science was brought to my notice. Physically, I was in good health. Mentally, I held feelings of resentment toward people supposed to be responsible for the poverty and injustice that were daily seen in our midst. I harbored feelings of hatred to a class and lived and preached, hoping to see the day that revenge would be taken for wrongs suffered. That was my mental state when Christian Science found me. I had met a man who had been healed in Christian Science, a man who had come up from the lowest depths of depravity that one could sink into, back to a state of sobriety, respectability, and cleanliness—a positive marvel. I became curious and attended a Wednesday evening meeting. I heard testimonies of healing from people of education and culture, and was amazed at their earnestness and candor. Their only lack seemed to be the insufficiency of words to express their gratitude.

I entered the hall curious, and came away impressed. I borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read. For weeks after reading the book I walked, so to speak, on air. I was on the mountain top. I became, for the first time in my life, the possessor of a Bible—the most wonderful book in the world, when read with the understanding gained through even a little knowledge of Christian Science. I was anxious to let my friends share what I had found, and many a rebuff I received until I discovered it was wisdom to keep my own counsel. I began to discriminate where to speak of Science and where not to. I had the good fortune to give it to my brother, living in a distant town, who was in that condition known as "man's extremity." It saved him. He was made a healthy man.

Personally, I had never experienced healing in Christian Science; but the time came when I had to have that experience. I was away on holiday and among strangers when I became very seriously ill. My wife was told by the doctor that one of my lungs was affected and that she need never expect me to do laborious work again. I remained until I was able to go home, and there I took up Christian Science treatment. Neighbors thought I had come home to die; however, I was healed of the supposed lung trouble and a most aggravating form of muscular rheumatism. My healing was slow, but permanent. I can conscientiously say I owe my life to Christian Science. To my mind the day is past for caviling as to whether Christian Science heals or not. I can say truly I know.
