My first impressions of Christian Science were received...
My first impressions of Christian Science were received when I was a little girl. These impressions were most unfavorable. An older cousin, who turned to Christian Science and joined The Mother Church, was talked about by the other members of the family as queer. I used to think of her with great pity and could not understand how she could leave her former church and God for such a wicked religion! I was taught that Christian Science was a doctrine of the evil one, and I must never have anything to do with it. This childhood experience influenced me and my attitude toward Christian Science for many years.
It was not until after my marriage that Christian Science was again brought to my direct attention, and this time through a friend whom I had not seen for several years. For six years I tried through persuasion and argument to turn her from Christian Science. I read and studied "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, that I might more intelligently criticize. (I have since learned that our textbook is understood only through spiritual discernment.) At the end of this long struggle I slowly awakened to the fact that Christian Science is the truth about God and man, and the spiritual light for which my hungry heart had been searching for years illumined my thought and life.
During the past eight years Christian Science has met my every need. My husband and I have both had the privilege of class instruction. As a mother of four boys, I could not live one day without the help of Christian Science. We have had very little sickness, although previous to our coming into Christian Science the doctor was a constant visitor in our home. The daily realization that "children" are "now the sons of God" brings daily proof that they are in truth "representatives of Life, Truth, and Love," as we read on page 582 of Science and Health.
