Ellensburg (Wash.) Capital

The recent lecture against Christian Science strikes the Capital as being about the most offensive display of poor taste that has come to its attention for a long time. We are surprised that the Ministerial Association permitted it (if they could have prevented it), and we shall be still more surprised if some of the ministers here do not disclaim responsibility for such utterances.

One of the chief charms of our city is its liberality toward and tolerance of the opinions of others. For many years there has been no attempt made to stir up the ever smoldering fires of religious intolerance, and the result has been that all churches and all faiths have dwelt together in peace and harmony, all prospering and progressing through the efforts of their pastors and congregations, and not by interfering with others.

Ellensburg has been particularly fortunate in having men as ministers who represent the very highest type of Christian gentlemen. It is unthinkable that any one of these could have ever been guilty of the breach of good taste which characterized this lecture. ... If the speaker's environment has been such that he has not come in contact with at least some of the millions of intelligent high-minded, and law-abiding men and women who are proud to call themselves Christian Scientists, then he has been most unfortunate and should lose no time in getting acquainted with some. There are some three hundred in this community, and we venture to say that there are none but will be glad to set the gentleman straight on some of his obvious misconceptions. And they might be willing to give him some badly needed lessons in courtesy, tolerance, and kindliness.
