It is a pleasure and privilege to tell something of what...
It is a pleasure and privilege to tell something of what Christian Science has done for me, and I hope that this statement of facts may be a help to others. Although I had casually heard of Christian Science for some years, I had given it little or no thought excepting as a passing fad, until during the spring and summer of 1909 I received several copies of The Christian Science Monitor, sent me by a relative who was interested in the work. I threw aside the first copies received, after opening them, but during the morning one of my associates saw them and asked me what they were. I told him, explaining that some of my relatives who were very much interested in Christian Science had sent them. Then we each picked up a copy glanced through it, our simulataneous remarks being to the effect that it seemed a good paper, the page on sport receiving especial comment as we had not expected to find a page of this character. From reading the Monitor, received from time to time, I gained the feeling that Christian Science was at least rational and that there might possibly be something in it after all, the more so as the Christian Scientists I knew were decidedly level-headed and intelligent.
At this time I was suffering with severe stomach trouble (as a young man I had had a siege of almost a year with gastric disease) and my condition becoming acute my doctor advised my removal from the country to San Francisco for medical treatment. On arriving here he further advised my being taken to a hospital, but my wife objected, as she would not be allowed to nurse me there, and being a trained nurse she naturally wished to look after me herself, so we remained at a hotel.
A relative then recommended Christian Science and left us a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Four days later I told my wife to send for a practitioner who had been mentioned to us, and he came about for o'clock on Friday afternoon and gave me treatment. At six o'clock I was out of bed, asking for something to eat, and after a good meal I returned to bed and slept well. The next day I was up and around a little, and the following day, Sunday, I attended my first Christian Science service. I was perfectly healed in two treatments, but still somewhat weak. I gained strength rapidly, however, and returned to country at the end of that week and resumed my work. At this time my enjoyment of tobacco, of which I was an excessive user, also of stimulants in all forms, left me. I did not realize what was the matter and for some days continued trying to smoke and drink, but neither tasted right, so I asked for treatment for the overcoming of these habits and was cured within a week, the desire for them never having returned.
