THE NEW YEAR

Mrs. Eddy says: "Time is a mortal thought, the divisor of which is the solar year. Eternity is God's measurement of Soul-filled years" (Science and Health, p. 598). She also says (p. 584), "Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded." The past year has been an eventful one for the human family in respect to the overcoming of certain beliefs in limitation, and in offering definite evidence that the birth-throes of our advancing civilization are destined to bring forth a larger sense of liberty than the world has yet known, and this because men are getting into closer touch with reality. That in the past year men have made some great strides toward better conditions, or rather toward the ultimate good, is due to the fact that a vital change in human thinking has been going on, almost imperceptibly yet irresistibly, for many years, and no one can deny that the tide of public opinion has at last turned in the right direction.

All true discoverers have been consciously or unconsciously guided by the light of inspiration, for not otherwise could they have endured "unto the end,"—to the final overcoming of the great difficulties which to human sense opposed their progress; but when Spirit moves upon the face of the waters, to bring forth better conditions for the race, the one most ready for the call of intelligence responds to that call, sees the need, sees also the divine idea which will meet the need, and is sustained in the arduous efforts required in giving it to the world. The pity is that so many brave, adventurous spirits miss their way by losing sight of the goal through the intrusion of self-interest. God's ideas cannot fail, but they must be brought forth in human consciousness under the protection of divine law expressed in justice, intelligence, and integrity, or we are likely to lose sight of them.

Of old the prophet prayed: "O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years." This prayer has been answered in the coming of Christian Science. There can be no question as to what constitutes the "work" here mentioned, for Christ Jesus, who did the Father's work and had much to say about it, showed men how they could avail themselves of the infinite provisions of divine Love and wisdom. In bringing these to them as remedial, he healed them,—made them whole,—and Christian Science is again carrying forward this blessed ministry "in the midst of the years."
