A Protest

Nebraska State Journal

Mr. Editor.

Christian Science treatment is by silent prayer, and the Scriptures tell us to pray without ceasing. Then there is no danger of praying "too much," and if one has prayed "too little" the remedy is to continue to pray. The Bible enjoins persistence in prayer by precept and by parable. That disease may be strengthened by prayer is a queer position for a Christian to take. Does our critic also contend that sin will be strengthened by prayer?

We do admit that Christ is the great physician and only healer, but that Christ has been dead "almost two thousand years" is a new and strange doctrine to which we do not subscribe. The gospel of salvation and immortality is based on a risen Christ, and if Christ be not risen, then is our hope vain. It was the risen Christ who said, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." It is the ever-living Christ—Immanual, God with us—who enables us to demonstrate life and health. If Christ is the vine and his people the branches, then if the vine is dead, so are the branches; but if the branches are alive, so is the vine. The one divine Life animates all the children of God.
