Reply to a London Critic
Indianapolis (Ind.) Journal
To the Editor.
In your issue of December 21, there appeared an article attacking Christian Science, copied from the London Lancet. It is filled with misleading statements. These statements reveal such crass ignorance concerning the subject discussed by the writer of the article that any wellinformed Christian Scientist must regard them with a smile of pity. But they are liable to mislead those readers of your paper who possess only a hazy knowledge of the subject, and I ask, therefore, a little of your valuable space to make some corrections in the interests of truth.
First.—The assertion in the article that Christian Science is "closely related to Manicheism" shows at once what a monstrous misconception exists in the mind of the writer of the article. Manicheism postulates two primal beings, Light (God) and Darkness, under the similitude of kingdoms, and declares that from the kingdom of Darkness have been born Satan and his wicked angels. Christian Science, per contra, postulates God (divine Principle) as All-in-all, and denies both the existence of any personal Satan, or devil, and also the existence, except as phenomena, of evil. The Manicheans regarded woman as the gift of demons, and rejected the Old Testament entire, and the greater part of the New Testament. Christian Science teaches the brotherhood of all men and women, and so reverences women as even to name God as "Our Father-Mother," and accepts the Bible in full.
