The Wednesday Evening Testimonials
The progress of the church lies in its manifestation of the presence of God and the fidelity of its members in the acknowledgment of God in what he has done and is doing for us all. The lack of this acknowledgment is not felt so much by the larger churches as by the smaller ones. The world knows of the achievements of Truth only through the beneficiaries thereof, and if we are silent as to the benefits we have received, no matter in what degree, we are hiding our light under a bushel, the light that ought to shine from the housetops. The Wednesday evening meetings were instituted for the purpose of giving all an opportunity to tell to the world how we have been benefited by this great Truth.
Here is where the hungry go to be fed. Here is where those who thirst for good, go to be satisfied. If thy brother ask of thee bread (expression of Truth and Love), wilt thou give him a stone (silence)? Has the weary wanderer in the wilderness of earth's dreary hopes only found his way again into a "dry and thirsty land, where no water is"? Jesus said, "And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward." How can we invite a friend or stranger to our meetings with the invitation, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, ... incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live;" and then sit down in perfect silence, not doing unto others as we would be done by?
Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health, p. 372, "A just acknowledgment of Truth, and what it has done for us, is an effectual help. If pride, superstition, or any error, prevents the honest recognition of benefits received, this will be a hindrance to the recovery of the sick and the success of the student."
