The business in money orders now averages about one million dollars a day, and when it is remembered that the business is done in thirty thousand offices, it is interesting to know that in the year just ended the department lost only $174. The coast and geodetic survey has established a magnetic observatory at Sitka, Alaska, and is constructing another at Honolulu, Hawaii, to cooperate with the British and German Governments in investigating problems of the magnetic forces and needle variations throughout the world.
