The Government has just concluded a money order convention with Bohvia and conventions with Peru and Greece are under way. The money order business of the United States increased nearly forty million dollars during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1901.

The business in money orders now averages about one million dollars a day, and when it is remembered that the business is done in thirty thousand offices, it is interesting to know that in the year just ended the department lost only $174. This sum was for the most part made up of cases where a postmaster paid money to the wrong person owing to the fact that there were two or more persons of the same name in the place.

The coast and geodetic survey has established a magnetic observatory at Sitka, Alaska, and is constructing another at Honolulu, Hawaii, to cooperate with the British and German Governments in investigating problems of the magnetic forces and needle variations throughout the world. This is in connection with two British expeditions and one German for the South pole. It is expected that the work of the expeditions will occupy two or three years.
