Is there an Easier Way?

We have heretofore spoken of the price of medical and other text-books, and shown that by comparison the price of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," is not only reasonable, but low. Lawyers know how expensive law books are. The lowest price is $5.00 for a standard text-book, and $6.00 to $7.00 a prevailing price.

The price on that invaluable compendium of 471 pages, "Miscellaneous Writings," bound in cloth, and printed on a fine quality of paper, is only $2.25, or in quantities of one dozen or more, $2.00 per volume. So of all the other books of the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy; they are not out of proportion with other standard books. They were, we dare say, never intended to be cheap, as the term goes. No spirit of competition entered into the fixing of the price upon them. They are sent forth on their intrinsic merit, to do their appointed work, and not to compete with other publishers.

The spirit that clamors for cheaper books relating to spiritual Truth, would, if it could, cheapen also the Truth itself. It would climb up some nearer and easier way. It is looking about for a back-door entrance, or a more convenient side-door entrance. It chafes under the stern demands of the front-door entrance and hopes to skip airily around it. Like Bunyan's allegorical characters in Pilgrim's Progress, "Formalist" and "Hypocrisy," this quality of thought would take the by-way leading to the right and left of the hill "Difficulty" rather than undertake to climb straight up it.
