God's day

Quietly listening to God is one of my favorite daily activities. I often call this my “daily work,” and what lovely work it is. Being quiet, still, and receptive to divine Love’s perfect ideas and hearing that “still small voice” brings such confidence to my day. I realize that it is God’s plan, God’s day, and I am watching it unfold with the expectancy of good.

Mrs. Eddy gives us the beautiful definition of day in the Glossary of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and I think of it often: “DAY. The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love” (p. 584 ).

One Tuesday morning, as I was listening quietly, the thought strongly came to go to my church. I had been planning to go on Thursday to take care of some cleaning there, but Love was guiding me to go now, on Tuesday.

I came up with many reasons not to go, but they all quickly fell by the wayside as I kept focusing on living in God’s day. I clearly saw that I should follow this direction and watch God’s wonderful, healing day unfold. So I went that morning to the church and did my light cleaning.

Our church building also houses a Christian Science Reading Room. On my way out, the Reading Room attendant asked if I would drop a copy of The Christian Science Journal in someone’s mailbox, if it was not out of my way. Someone had phoned just moments before, asking for a copy. The attendant asked if the address was close to me, or whether I would pass it on my way home. I looked at the address and told the librarian that the house was right on my street—just five doors down from my house!

We went back to the Reading Room phone, and I told the caller I would put the Journal in her mailbox within the hour. She explained that she had an out-of-town guest who wanted a copy and also wanted to speak with a Christian Science practitioner.

“Well,” I happily told her, “I’ll deliver the Journal—and I am also a practitioner!” So, I took the magazine over, and was able to stop for a visit as well. What a day! It was full of healing, joy, friends, and fellowship. We had a wonderful chat, and the issue the woman was dealing with was soon healed.

I often think of how on paper that morning just wouldn’t have made sense: being five doors down from someone and then driving an hour away to have her find me. But my prayers had led me to just where I needed to be. The area where we live has many Reading Rooms . . . and my neighbor chose to call our Reading Room . . . and I was there that morning . . . and the Reading Room attendant knew I was in the church working, as well as in what part of town I lived. Love was bringing comfort to all of us. It was a totally unexpected day—and seeing God’s day unfolding was much more fun than what I had put down on my “things to do today” list.

I have found over the years that the more I listen and obey the “still, small voice of Truth” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 323 ), the more I see evidence in my life of God’s plan at work. Days and moments like this have become the norm.

Every day, for each and every one of us, Love is unfolding a beautiful day full of healing and opportunities to bless our neighbor. And it simply starts with listening.
