Eye on the world: Freedom from addiction

A recent Christian Science Monitor editorial, “The rush to curb a heroin/opioid crisis,” addresses society’s urgent efforts to curb a growing number of overdoses from opiate addiction, and reports that “a great deal of unity now surrounds efforts to free people from drug dependency” in response to “an acute opioid crisis in many states.” It further states: “While government-backed programs can rescue people in an acute drug crisis, and steer them toward treatment, much of the long-term healing takes place through the quality of an individual’s thinking and relationships.”

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 8:32

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.

Titus 2:11, 12

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike.

The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses. Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Then they will control their own bodies through the understanding of divine Science. Dropping their present beliefs, they will recognize harmony as the spiritual reality and discord as the material unreality.

Related articles from The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel:

In “Destroying the drug lure”: “The fundamental need for combating the evil of drug abuse is to acquire an understanding of God as omnipotent good, and of man made in His image and likeness: God, the only cause and creator; man, His perfect idea, beloved and unblemished, having dominion over all the earth.” And “Those who glimpse the spiritual truth that man is free born, never to be enslaved, have the means at hand to gain a full and lasting dominion over drug enslavement.”

In “Defeat drug addiction”: “The shackles of addiction, not being from God, good, have no claim on any of us, because we are governed by the only true power—Spirit. Each one of us is a cherished spiritual idea; there are no unwanted children in divine Love. Each and every individual has an inherent worth, purpose, and opportunity from our Father-Mother God: to express Him.” And “When we pray about these things, affirming the spiritual facts about God’s creation, we’re counteracting the mistaken beliefs that man is a helpless, hopeless mortal, and that true satisfaction is elusive and temporary. This blesses ourselves, our neighbors (those we know and don’t know), and our community, and elevates the thought of mankind.”
