Eye on the world: Provision that’s not based on chance
In “Powerball lottery jackpot: It's not a winning ticket for states” The Christian Science Monitor’s Editorial Board remarks on the detrimental effects of lotteries, which many states promote. The editorial notes that “... government should not be in the business of selling the idea that one advances in life by chance” and—referring to the Powerball jackpot that recently hit $1.5 billion—concludes, “The absurdity of offering a $1.5 billion jackpot should be a wake-up call for states to focus less on faith in chance and more on the enduring potential of their citizens.”
Ideas on this subject:
From the Bible:
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
—James 1:17
From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:
Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need. It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good.

In “True wealth—abundant ideas, abundant good”: “Real wealth has its source only in Spirit, never in matter; it has its basis in revelation, never in mortal reasoning or scheming; it has its foundation in ideas, never in things. It is instant and immediate; not delayed or withheld. It is universal, not personal; it has a selfless purpose, not a self-centered one. It is constant, perpetual, continuous, eternal; never interrupted, cyclical, seasonal, or fluctuating.”
In “No need to gamble—you have it all!”: “Since each of us is the beloved child of God, we already have all we could ever need or desire. Far beyond the hollow hopes of financial wealth, the richness of divine Love’s limitless provision not only supplies all our human needs, it also brings genuine happiness, deep contentment, and unwavering peace of mind. Through prayer that recognizes Love’s care, we gain the wisdom and ability to multiply that good for ourselves and others. This is true wealth that can only increase as our trust in God grows. No need to gamble for it. We can claim it right now!”
