Learning to love

Originally published in Spanish

“I cannot love them,” I thought more than once.
“It’s impossible.
They don’t understand what I understand.
They exasperate me
and make my love fade away,
exhausting my patience.”

Ah, poor me!
Believing that I was
love’s origin and source,
where patience itself is born.

But one day, just before dawn,
God’s sweet voice reached my ear:
“You don’t love with your own love,
but with Mine, and it does not run out; it remains
throughout eternity, for all My children.”

What patience, Father!
How tenderly You whisper Your words
to the empty heart!

I need to learn.
Teach me not to see what You did not create,
and to elevate how I see;
to love when it seems impossible to love,
and not to believe that such love is mine.

Ah, Mother Love, teach me!
To reflect what You are,
to look with Your eyes
and, above all, to love,
to love, without limits, with Your infinite love.
