"Nothing I do goes right—I always have bad luck," announced the girl, her heels thumping the brick wall. "My mother said I was born for bad luck—I was even bad luck for her before I was born. She says it's in your stars."

"I don't think I was born for bad luck," said her friend moodily, "but I been having it ever since we moved to this house. I think the devil owns this neighborhood."

"You don't even know what bad luck is," said the third girl. "Why, I got an uncle that an old lady put a curse on him, and everything goes wrong for him, for his whole family, I mean like something is always happening to them."
