Education and the newspaper

Originally published in the 1925 pamphlet titled “Education and the newspaper”

Right thinking, the bond which should make the daily newspaper and education inseparable

Matters of public interest are found in greater variety and in a more available form in the daily newspaper than in any other place. The demand for an education that concerns itself more closely with the life of the community has been recognized, so that the material of education is composed more and more of the "matters of public interest." Therefore the newspaper is truly an educator. The public, faithfully and voluntarily, attends the newspaper school six or seven days every week in the year.

Civilization may be said to have awarded the honorary degree of Master of Education to the daily newspaper. But few newspapers have earned this degree. The purpose of The Christian Science Monitor is to be considered among these few, and yet it would encourage other members of the press to attain a like position and thus increase the number. A newspaper in its whole tenor is educational or it fails in its chief function.
