The California fires and helping those in need

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

As we hear news of wildfires in California and see pictures on the Internet or television, we may ask ourselves, “What can I do to help those in trouble? What do I have to offer?”

In times of need, people come forward in so many ways to help their neighbors. It’s natural for us to want to do our part in putting out these fires. But we don’t have to be standing right on the front lines to make a difference. Every single individual who is willing to pray can aid in bringing things to a safe conclusion.

I’ve found that listening to as much of the news as I need to inform me of any situation helps lend specificity to my prayers. Then, I often switch off the radio or television and turn to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. For practical help, Jesus directed us to, “Enter into thy closet, when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” The Message interprets it this way, “Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God and you will begin to sense his grace.”
