Back to restful nights

Originally appeared on spirituality.com.

Last winter, I experienced a severe case of insomnia. This made getting the rest I needed almost impossible. For several weeks, it was difficult for me to fall asleep, and often I’d wake up many times a night after I did finally get to sleep. It got to the point that I was afraid to go to bed at night, knowing I might be tossing and turning for hours.

I knew that sleeping pills wouldn’t be the answer. They promised only temporary solutions. Although ads on TV talked about quick results, paired with images of women slumbering soundly, my chosen treatment was different. I’d been a student of Christian Science for over a decade, and so I decided to pray and seek God’s help to resolve this issue. Christian Science had healed me and others of so many other problems in the past, and I felt confident that insomnia could also be healed.

In my prayers, I earnestly reached out to God, acknowledging that as His child, sleeplessness was not part of my true spiritual nature. This basic concept of God’s perfect, spiritual creation comes from the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible. I began to study Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Bible more closely every day.
