HEAVEN IS WITHIN

The weary world has gone to sleep,Is lulled at last in slumbers deep,And ever dreams of sin;It dreams that evil here must stay,That goodness is far, far away,—But heaven is within!

TRUST

Fear thou not, my little one,Tho' out upon the wold;Thy Father's hand is near thee,Thy trustful hand to hold.

THE MORNING LIGHT

Methought I saw a hill and heavy cross,And error crying, "Crucify!"Then on that cross the "perfect man" was nailed,While all the earth was black and heaven wailed.

"THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN."

It gleams as lightning in the lurid shade;'Tis like the leaven that the housewife laidUnseen among the meal, till all was made;Like fisher's net, filled from the weltering deepWith bad and good, to cast aside or keep;It comes in silence, thief-like, while we sleep;Like the small mustard-seed, uncared, that fellAnd grew the mightiest of the herbs, untilThe birds of heaven upon her branches dwell;'Tis like the king who for his marriage-feastCalled rich and poor, the peasant and the priest; But all men made excuse, the greatest as the least.

AFTER ALL

Our sobs and our laughter may follow each otherAs swift as our heart-throbs, many's the time; Our smiles and our tears may neighbor each otherBehind our quick eyelids, many's the time;Hide-and-seek may be played by the clouds and the sunlightAcross the blue spaces forever above us;Yet we know, after all, there is always the sunlight,And we know God is Love and is ever above us.

From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

UPWARD

A little thought in dark seclusion dwelt.

"BE STILL, AND KNOW"

The day no more seems gay and glad,Instead, the time is sorry, sad,And full of woe.

THE UPWARD LOOK

Lift up thine eyes! The act alone will give thee strengthTo brave the trying grief-time's length,To meet thy woes,To find a peace 'mid worldly strife,And win the race of human life,In spite of foes!

INFINITIES

A drop of opalescent dewReflects entire the varied hueOf rainbow, sun, and sky;The fine essential fragrance sweetOf nature's perfumed store replete,Is the violet's supply.

RISEN WITH CHRIST

When he, the God-anointed, gently steppedFrom out the rock-ribbed tomb that Sabbath morn,Where'er his foot alighted blossomed forthA virgin lily; thus was Easter born.

PROTECTION

When God leads, though earth darkness shroudWith foemen close at hand,'Twixt you and them His flaming cloudWill never fail to stand.
