WATCH

Watch !Not on the moated towerOf your cherished castle walls,To see that only friendly footUpon the drawbridge falls;

AWAKENING

O Love , that to the cry of our poor heartsStands ever-ready with an answer sweet,In this fair spring-time of a soul reborn,We lay our offerings humbly at Thy feet.

"ALWAY."

"Lo , I am with you alway"—blest assurance! No doubts torment me now, no fears assail,I face life's battle with a calm endurance,The truth my sword, and love my coat of mail.

BABEL

Ages ago, when mortal mind was young,But not innocuous, it essayed to buildTo heaven a tower.

"STAND STILL."

Ye shall not need to fight—stand still! Not fight, and yon great hostSwiftly advancing, grimly bent on strife?

THE WAVE

I POUR my voice upon the unresting shore,A sigh, a song, a rhapsody, a roar:And 'neath the golden sunI fly and float and run,And fling the sparkling pearls upon the airFrom out my gleaming hair.

From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

OUR LIFE

O God, our Life, upon whose tender breastAs trustful babes our heart should ever rest,Knowing that evil hath nor place nor part,Nor any voice nor kingdom where Thou art.
Since Father Time stands still, and heaven is here,And all eternity is ours by gift,Should we not learn from God — yes, know, indeed,That every cloud contains a friendly rift?

LONGING

Come that unshadowed dayWhen naught but good shall be,And mortals, wearily,No more shall cast awayThe blossoms, withered, sere,That but an hour agone,Dew-fragrant with the dawn.

OMNIPRESENCE

I may not know the breath that thrills the trees,Nor whose the touch that gives the grass its green,Nor how it is the snowflake gets its sheen,And why the rain-cloud woos the southern breeze.
Hitherto the Lord hath helped us—Rest, my soul, in that sweet thought:Every evil that assailed us,Overcome and brought to naught.

"BLESSED ARE YE"

Discouraged one! Do neighbors criticize, and friends revile,And e'en thy dearest meet thy loving smileWith jeers, not understanding Truth the while?
