Poems

On Upward Wing

As sings the lark on upward wing,Trilling his joy for all to hear,So would I sing, my Lord and King,Of all Thy love and care.

Receptivity

Twice came the heaven-lit words To heal the plaint of grief: I have formed thee of Myself! My radiant right shone out As instantly as bird-song Pierces night; All earth-tied weights slipped off.

From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

He that dwelleth in the consciousness of good Shall abide beneath the shelter of Love's wings, Safe, in measureless contentment as he sings Of Love's sanctuary, and of Love's beatitude.

Fret Not Thyself

Fret not thyself—Fear not a coming night;Thy home must ever beIn endless light.

Recompense

DEAR God, may I, as recompense for Love,Give tithe of tenderness, some kindness show;Help lift some thought to quietness, above!Dear God, may I, as recompense for Love,Thy ever present help to someone prove,That here and now Thy healing waters flow!Dear God, may I, as recompense for Love,Give tithe of tenderness, some kindness show!

Service

ONLY to hold a cup of water coolTo lips that thirst for welling drafts of Life,Instead of earth's salt pools of bitternessBrimmed with illusions—This is what I ask,Leaning on strength divine to do my joyful task.

From Conquering hate, enthroning peace

Love's triumph over hate

How can we love when others hate? Prayerful turning to God, divine Love, with the earnest desire to express His qualities under all circumstances will give us strength and ability to do right.

Today

Today is mine!An opportunity supreme to do His will,Forget this human sense of self, and be so stillThat I shall recognize my Father's voice,And in irradiance of Life rejoice!

What Things You Need

What things you need the Father now is knowing—By sense unrecognized—Yours to receive in measure overflowingLove's bounty realized.

Sanctuary

No earthly food can satisfy his hunger,Nor waters quench his thirstWho has been ledOnce only to Love's banquet table,And there with other starving onesBeen warmed and fed.

The Overflowing Cup

When in the face of thoseWho seem thy foes,A table Love prepares,Bid them first eat; divine compassion knowsThou hast no foes,Thy need is one with theirs.

Reclothed

Clothed and in his rightful mind,'Tis thus the maniac they find.

Gratitude

Rich blessings fill my every hour,Love's power protects me from all harm;I walk secure from every ill,Held by God's everlasting arm.
