'LOVE DISSOLVED IT'

Two years ago I was unexpectedly attacked by a severe pain I'd never experienced before. Having heard others describe this kind of condition, it occurred to me that it might be a kidney stone.

I'd successfully relied on Christian Science prayer for healing all my life and had no doubt that it would meet this challenge as well. So my instant reaction was to turn to God for help. Christian Science has taught me to examine and alter my thinking rather than to look for a physical change, and that recognizing my spirituality as God's image and likeness brings any needed healing.

As I prayed, this line from a hymn came to me: "Healed is thy hardness, His love hath dissolved it" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 278). At the same time, I remembered this from Science and Health: "In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death" (p. 242).
