A spiritual outlook found us a home
This article was published on December 24, 2020 as a web original.
Have you ever considered love to be something that can meet your needs? The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, wrote, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 494).
When I first encountered this sentence as a child, I mistakenly thought it meant that God, divine Love, knew I needed some physical item and would provide it. What I came to understand is that we actually already include everything we need. This is because we each reflect God, Spirit, who includes all—we are God’s “image,” as Genesis 1 puts it (see verses 26 and 27)—and so are completely spiritual. As I continue to explore and ponder this, I have found with each new adventure that my everyday needs are met fully and tangibly.
Early on, when I was a single parent, my children and I would move as I found new employment. With each new move, it would be necessary for me to ask divine Love what I truly needed and to expand my understanding of what home truly is. Through my experience with past moves, I had embraced the idea that home is a spiritual idea and is present wherever I am. On several occasions, praying this way led me to just the right place. However, at one particular time, the circumstances were particularly challenging: In less than ten days, my four children and I needed a home, and I had no job and no job prospects. For several weeks I had been looking at a number of places to live, but the answer was always the same: It appeared I was a financial risk. How could I afford anything for my four children without employment?
