Rise up! And follow Christ.

Have you ever had your hopes lifted so high that you have been impelled to move forward in a new direction? And then seen very encouraging results that lifted your hopes and commitment even higher? And then something occurred that dashed your hopes?

Then you can imagine, in some modest degree, what Christ Jesus’ disciples felt after his crucifixion.

One by one Jesus’ original twelve disciples had spontaneously followed him because of an extraordinary sense of hope he ignited within them. Take Matthew, for example. The Bible records it this way: “And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him” (Matthew 9:9). Something about Jesus evidently stirred Matthew’s heart to such a degree that he spontaneously rose up, left his established career behind, and set forth to follow where Jesus would lead him.
