DURING MY SOPHOMORE year in high school, I felt stressed and overwhelmed. It seemed I'd taken on one too many tasks, and I thought I couldn't handle all my responsibilities. As a Christian Scientist, it was natural for me to pray about the situation. I knew this would be a good approach. But I decided that I didn't have the time to pray and shrugged the idea off.
However, when my grades in one of my classes began consistently dropping (a subject I normally thrived in), I realized something had to change. It was evident to me that the grades were a reflection of the rocky relationship I felt I had with the teacher of the class. From the beginning of the school year, we hadn't seen eye to eye. My friend and I talked about how we didn't like the structure of the class, and, unfortunately, I can see how we sometimes came off as rude or disobedient. I was constantly frustrated with the homework, and with myself for not understanding the homework.
ONE NIGHT, MY TEACHER called the dorm I was living in to talk to my hall's "house mom." Because I was attending Principia Upper School, a high school for Christian Scientists, both my teacher and my house mom were Christian Scientists. The teacher informed my house mom of our struggle to understand one another, and told her that she wanted to pray about the situation to find healing. My house mom agreed that prayer was a good idea and later told me about the phone call.
