Heaven’s aftersmile

Love, God, provides powerful, ever-present protection and inspired direction.

No snare, no fowler, pestilence or pain;
       No night drops down upon the troubled breast,
When heaven’s aftersmile earth’s tear-drops gain,
       And mother finds her home and heav’nly rest
                                                           (Poems, p. 4).

So ends a poem titled “Mother’s Evening Prayer” by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I never really understood or appreciated the full impact of that poetic phrase “heaven’s aftersmile” until recently.
