God’s timeless calm
Letting God guide our thought instead of reacting to external pressure reveals divine Love’s calm direction.
My mother often reminded me of the old adage, “The early bird catches the worm”—nudging me to act quickly to get ahead. This bit of “wisdom” stayed with me for many years, along with a perception that success means racing against time.
Our culture reinforces that message. Urgency permeates our daily routine. Emails, deadlines, and notifications press for attention. It can feel as though time dictates progress, often at the expense of peace and stability. But does this pressure truly have power over us?
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, offers a different view. In an address titled “Obedience,” she says, “According to my calendar, God’s time and mortals’ differ” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 117). As Eddy explains throughout her writings, God, Love, is the only true power and governs the universe, including man. God’s love does not shift or fade. Even when things feel uncertain, God’s goodness is constant and continues to unfold. So, rather than getting caught up in a sense of urgency, we can trust divine Love’s harmony, already at work, to govern every detail of our lives.
