What is our superpower?

Like many people of my generation, I remember the childhood joy of rushing to the store to pick up the latest issue of Superman. I recall the excitement at seeing the new cover and opening to the colorful pages. Above all, I loved the stories. Though the plots could be dark and included comic book violence, the central theme was Superman’s devotion to doing good, and good always won out over evil. That resonated with me as a kid and, later, as a teen.

Although the violence seems far more profuse and graphic on the big screen, that central theme remains in the latest Superman movie. And there’s something profound about the underlying concept that to solve our problems, we need something beyond or transcending human power and prowess.

In the fictional world of Superman and those who aid him, it’s metahumans who meet the need—characters with abilities beyond what is normal or natural for the rest of us. In practice, however, what’s needed is metaphysics, the higher, spiritual law that Jesus proved in his life and healing ministry. Metaphysics exists beyond the commonly accepted laws of physics, biology, chemistry, etc., but has a very practical impact on our lives. It’s the Science behind all that Jesus taught and demonstrated, Christian Science. This is defined by its Discoverer, Mary Baker Eddy, as “the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony” (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1).
