A midnight victory
In a Bible Lesson on the subject “Christ Jesus” from the Christian Science Quarterly, I noticed that the word demonstrate, or some version of it, appeared no less than eleven times. The “demonstrators” were Jesus and his followers, and what they were demonstrating was our oneness with God, divine Love—a oneness that includes no sickness, sin, or death. When someone demonstrates something, they are proving what’s true or showing what’s possible. And in the divine Science that Jesus taught and demonstrated, the results were perfect. Every time. They revealed that we too can experience the effects of understanding this oneness.
I’d like to share how I proved this for myself. I awoke in the middle of the night in pain and with an alarming sense of weight on my chest right over my heart. I immediately thought of statements from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, such as: “When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought” (p. 495). Following that guidance, I calmed my thoughts.
Then I remembered the word demonstrate. I recognized that I could do just what I had been reading about when studying that Lesson: I could demonstrate my oneness with divine Love. I could cast out the belief that I had become separated from God, or that God would allow any frightening or discordant condition to exist. Praying for several minutes, I thought about how much God loves me and about all the healings I’ve had over the years through the study and practice of Christian Science. Then I realized that the chest pain and weight had vanished. That was more than a year ago, and they have not returned.
