Trials and God’s care
Disruptions in my career have often demanded a deep focus on spiritual solutions.
In the middle of a difficult situation, it can be hard to find a silver lining. We may feel like Jonah in the fish’s belly when he said to God: “I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about” (Jonah 2:4, 5).
Jonah changed his attitude and was saved from becoming fish food. He then successfully preached to the city of Nineveh, inspiring the people to repent their rejection of the one God.
The Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, experienced many trials and triumphs while healing, teaching her healing method, preaching, and founding a church. The growth of her church led to attacks on her, such as a lawsuit brought by a small group of family members. They claimed she was unable to manage her affairs (and her by then considerable financial assets), thus indirectly attacking the church she had founded and its teachings. She proved these claims groundless, and the lawsuit was dismissed.
