No more headaches

In an article in an early issue of the Sentinel, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210).

I had an opportunity on two separate occasions, years apart, to see the power of these ideas demonstrated almost instantaneously. The first took place around one in the morning. I was pacing the floor in agony with a headache. I had struggled with headaches periodically. I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help. I poured out my concerns about a student in the elementary school class I taught who seemed to be in desperate circumstances.

The practitioner addressed each one of my concerns with a spiritual truth. I clung to each truth with all my heart. She continued to comfort and reassure me with healing ideas for a few minutes more. Then she abruptly said, “You are healed, are you not?” I gasped in amazement, for there was no more pain. I had been so absorbed in thinking about God and His care for each of His children that I had become completely unaware of my body. My thought had become full of divine Truth and Love—no room for pain. A comforting peace washed over me, and regarding the student, I knew that God would reveal the necessary steps forward to everyone concerned. This did, in fact, happen. A beautiful plan for meeting this little girl’s needs unfolded very soon afterward and was put into action.

Fast forward about eight years. It was a Wednesday evening and time to go to the testimony meeting at my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I always looked forward to hearing the readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. And, of course, the testimonies of healing through reliance on Christian Science given by members and visitors during the second half of the meeting were always inspiring. However, I almost didn’t go because I was struggling with a headache. Since that late-night healing of a headache years earlier, I had only had a handful of headaches, and they had been quickly healed. So, I proceeded to go to the meeting.

The readings and testimonies were uplifting, as usual. One testimony was very intriguing, and I wasn’t quite sure it squared with my understanding of Christian Science. I remember driving home and thinking about what I knew to be true about God and His children from my study of Christian Science. I was sincerely seeking to understand a Bible story related in that testimony. All of a sudden, I realized that I was completely free of pain. There was no headache. I don’t know when the pain left, but I suspect it was when I was trying to figure out the healing truth in that Bible story.

Just as quickly as I realized that the pain was not there, it rushed back in. But I laughed out loud. I realized that when my thought had been full of Truth and Love, when my thought had been striving to enter the kingdom of God, there had been no pain. No pain this night or during that late-night call to the practitioner years earlier. I then knew without a doubt that a headache was not actually something physical. It was a belief, a mental suggestion that I’d accepted, and it had no power when I recognized all power as belonging to God, good. The pain then vanished immediately, never to return.

It has been almost thirty years since that healing, and I have never suffered from headaches again.

I am so grateful for Jesus Christ, and for what God imparted to Mary Baker Eddy showing us how to live the truths he taught. Through her self-sacrifice and great love for humanity, we have this wonderful Christian Science to know and to demonstrate. To every worker in the Christian Science Field, I give gratitude for your unselfish service for the Cause of Christian Science.
