Baby’s prognosis overturned

As a parent of two young children, I am truly grateful that my study of Christian Science has taught me that I can turn to God in any situation. When searching for clarity, whether it’s regarding a health issue or disharmony between family members, I’m learning to trust that God is always there for us. I’d like to give gratitude for a meaningful healing around the birth of my first son.

In an early ultrasound, two conditions were noticed that are considered possible indicators of a genetic disorder. I received this news via my cellphone just before walking into a church meeting. I cannot think of a place other than church that would have better enabled me to take this medical opinion and just “cast [my] burden upon the Lord” (Psalms 55:22). During this incredibly productive and instructive meeting, the members discussed the power of sharing divine Science with our community, and the healing power of divine Love. I felt truly uplifted and unafraid to tackle this new situation with prayer.

My husband and I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for us, and we found some powerful examples and ideas in the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, offering guidance that could help meet our baby’s particular need. One was the idea of the divine trinity, because we’d been told the umbilical cord had two vessels where there should have been three. Christian Science interprets the trinity as Life, Truth, and Love, three synonyms for God, and we knew that not one of these could be missing. Also, the Christian Science textbook defines the word children, in part, as “the spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 582). So we happily thought of our little one as a representative of God—a perfect expression of Life, Truth, and Love.
