A family’s blessings

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord” (Psalms 122:1). This Bible verse describes my childhood, as my father was a minister, and going to church was an aspect of my life that brought much happiness and joy.

In contrast, our home life was one of tension and sickness. My mother was constantly in and out of the hospital, and my father had many recurring health problems until he passed on. Following his passing, my mother went into a deep depression, was on strong medication, and had grave fears about being left alone. I had been married about a year when my husband was called into the armed services. My teenage sister feared she would never marry and might eventually have to carry alone the responsibility of caring for our mother. I felt a great burden of family responsibility, as my oldest sister lived in another state with her small children and could not give assistance to our mother. I often became very nervous and could not sleep, and I took medication for both of these problems.

A friend of my mother’s was a Christian Scientist, and she suggested that my mother visit a Christian Science practitioner, someone who helps people through prayer. And she did.
