Grief lifted through God’s love
It was ultimately God’s love that lifted me out of grief. But initially I wasn’t able to feel that love.
When my brother-in-law called one morning to let me know my sister had unexpectedly passed on, I didn’t handle the news very well. I felt an overwhelming grief. She’d been an integral part of my life, with almost daily contact. Our love for each other never faltered. And this support carried through to sharing in the study and practice of Christian Science. We were there for each other in so many ways.
For the next couple of days after the call, I wallowed in sadness. Although church friends and others reached out to offer companionship and support, I closed myself off from phone calls and visits. I tried to find comfort in reading that week’s Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly, listening to and reading articles from the Sentinel and The Christian Science Journal, and appreciating notes of condolence from friends. But I was just going through the motions.
