Severe burn healed
One summer when I was in college, I had a job leading trips for a summer camp. On the morning of one overnight trip, we were cooking bacon over an open fire, and when I reached to pull the pan off the fire, the pan flipped, and bubbling bacon grease spilled all over one of my hands. The pain was intense.
Not wanting to upset the kids, I quickly wrapped a bandanna around my hand and walked off down the trail by myself. For several minutes I couldn’t think straight at all, but then I began practically shouting the words to a few of my favorite hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, particularly the words from some of Mary Baker Eddy’s poems. Looking back now, I can see that reviewing these hymns helped me turn my thought to God and His presence, and away from the pain and fear. I was able to think more clearly and calmly, while deciding what to do.
I walked back to the campsite and assured everyone that I was OK. I remembered an old, run-down building with a sign saying “Mt. Moosilauke Health Clinic” in a nearby town, and managed to drive there to have my hand bandaged. The nurse did so without comment, and I was grateful for her professionalism and apparent lack of alarm.
