‘Dear God, what is the standard?’
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1). I love this Bible citation. Its truth sustained me through some challenging years and led me to Christian Science.
I was on a trip on an island off the West Coast of the United States. As I biked through a little village, I passed a Christian Science Reading Room and felt compelled to go in. An attendant patiently answered my questions and shared information about the study and healing practice of Christian Science. The atmosphere of peace in that Reading Room was palpable, and I felt that something very significant might be found there. When I left to continue my ride, the attendant gave me several issues of the Christian Science Sentinel and The Christian Science Journal.
That night in my room, as I read the articles and testimonials found in these magazines, I was hopeful that I had found the stability and peace I had been looking for. “Trials are proofs of God’s care. Spiritual development germinates not from seed sown in the soil of material hopes, but when these decay, Love propagates anew the higher joys of Spirit, which have no taint of earth,” writes Mary Baker Eddy, Founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 66). Early on in my study of Christian Science, that statement helped me see that God does not send trials, but sustains us as we grow in spiritual understanding. I had faced some severe trials before I was mature enough to understand the truth of being.
