Seeking God’s presence in ‘sacred solitude’
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Right there where a frantic Christmas scramble seems to be playing out, God is there!”?
That isn’t always obvious. For instance, the British pop music industry has spawned many Christmas anthems that have a great spirit of joy about them. Yet they portray Christmas as a busy holiday for family and friends, in which food, gifts, and Santa, rather than God, are center stage.
Then there are those who are alone at Christmastime, and whose loneliness is exacerbated by everyone else seeming to have so much fun. In 1974 British band Mud topped the UK charts with “Lonely This Christmas,” containing the simple but poignant lines:
