Prayer eliminates foot pain

One morning as I was walking to church to play piano for the Christian Science Sunday School, I became afraid I wouldn’t make it on time because my heel was growing very painful. The pain had begun the day before when I had been walking to the library. I had prayed at that time, but there was no resolution.

So on Sunday morning, I hoped the pain would subside if I just walked slower. It didn’t. I thought about getting a taxi but decided that was ridiculous because I lived so close, and also because I didn’t want to sidestep the opportunity to work out this problem in Christian Science. So, I affirmed that I could be healed by listening to God.

It’s worth noting that material suggestion—what we call mortal mind—always argues that we are separate or distanced from God. In this case, I was tempted just to get to church quickly and avoid confronting the problem, and I was also tempted to think I couldn’t remember any spiritual truths about God and man that I could apply right away. But then the thought came that God, divine Mind, is always communicating His ideas to man spontaneously, and God doesn’t forget.
