Divine Love expressed—the lifter of health and morals

The expression of love toward us is a powerful motivator for the expression of goodness within us, especially when it is the expression of that divine Love that sees beyond our flawed human personality into the pure goodness that characterizes our real identity as God’s pure reflection.

Mary Baker Eddy felt this pure love of God expressed through the love of her mother, through her study of the Bible, and especially through the example and teachings of Christ Jesus. And this love healed her of long-standing physical suffering and led to her discovery and successful practice of the divine Science of the healing and saving Christ, Truth, practiced by Jesus. Thus, it was clear to Mrs. Eddy that the love of God is present and active for all to experience, to be healed by, to express in one’s own life and relationships, and to bring healing and reformation into the lives of those we embrace in God’s love.

In her textbook on Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy explained, “In divine Science, man is the true image of God,” and that this is what Jesus embodied in his own nature and saw in others. She went on to say, “The divine nature was best expressed in Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted their lives higher than their poor thought-models would allow,—thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying” (p. 259).
