No more altitude sickness
One winter’s night I found myself alone in a cabin, high in the mountains of Colorado, suffering all the symptoms of altitude sickness. I was able to reach a Christian Science practitioner on my cellphone, and I was very grateful for that right off the bat. Reception is not always the best in the mountains.
The practitioner assured me that I was surrounded by legions of angels. I liked that idea. I was familiar, from my earliest days as a Christian Science Sunday School student, with the idea that angels are thoughts from God, and that they would protect and heal me if I would listen to them.
After I ended the call, the thought that came through loud and clear was that the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about me. I recognized this as a reference to a Bible story about Elisha that I have always loved (see II Kings 6:8–17). Elisha had been advising the king of Israel to avoid several ambushes set for him by the king of Syria. Word of this came to the Syrians, and learning that Elisha was in the city of Dothan, the Syrian king sent “horses, and chariots, and a great host.” They surrounded the town while its inhabitants were sleeping, and in the morning, they were a shocking and frightening sight to Elisha’s servant.
