Family healings and protection during attack
As a child, I experienced several healings through exclusive reliance on Christian Science treatment. They include an immediate healing of a deep cut on my finger, which happened during a camping trip, and of a broken arm, which was perfectly healed within a few days. Experiences such as these led me to take Sunday School seriously. In my classes, where I learned about the nature of God and man, I came to know God as an active presence in my experience, and to understand that my entire being, my real spiritual identity, was my Father-Mother God’s self-expression. The healings reinforced my trust in God, helped me stay out of trouble as a teenager, and gave me something practical to turn to when there were needs.
For instance, when I was a high-school senior, one night I was in the city with a friend, and a man approached us on the sidewalk. I became aware that this man was agitated when, for no apparent reason, he suddenly drew back his fist to strike me. In the moment of the attack, I recall mentally calling out to God for help.
The truth that God was present, and could help, instantly filled my thoughts, and I knew that I was safe. I found myself ducking in a way I’d never practiced and that felt like a dance. The man slid over my back from the momentum of his strike. The next thing I knew, he was sliding onto the sidewalk behind me, his face toward the ground.
