Finding peace in God’s love

When I was born, the doctor told my mother that I wouldn’t live to age five unless an operation was performed. My grandmother was a Christian woman, and she said, “No, leave her in God’s hands, and let His will be done.” I think she understood that God’s will is good, and that we could trust His will for me to be good. She loved the Bible and often read to me from it. She always treated me as a normal, whole child. Others in the family were fearful that I was going to pass on at a young age, but I believed my grandmother’s conviction that I was complete and well, and so I went out and played with the neighborhood children like a normal kid.

This gave me a foundation for later in life, when I found myself searching for something deeper to satisfy an unfulfilled longing I had to feel more peace and love. One day I heard a Christian Science Sentinel radio program. I had never heard of Christian Science before. But after hearing that program, I was very excited to listen to it every Sunday morning. Many helpful testimonies were shared, where people told of how their understanding of an all-loving God had healed them.

I found the listing for a local Church of Christ, Scientist, in the newspaper and began attending services. When I walked through the door, two members, who are my best friends today, greeted me so warmly that I felt immediately embraced in love. I walked into the auditorium and looked up to see these words from First John on the wall: “God is love” (4:8). As I sat through the church service, I felt a peace I had never known before.
