Confidence in God’s laws brings needed relief
A few summers ago, while grabbing a towel draped over the railing of our deck, a splinter of wood went under one of my fingernails and lodged between the nail and the flesh of my finger. I wasn’t able to pry the sliver out, and the finger became inflamed and painful. A friend who was visiting me made a prediction about what would happen before the splinter would come out.
I knew my friend wasn’t trying to be unkind, but her remarks startled me. I decided that what I really needed to do was to pray about this situation. And as soon as I remembered that I could pray, I became less fearful and stopped trying to remove the splinter.
This was on a Wednesday. That evening I attended a testimony meeting at my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. As you can imagine, I listened very attentively to the readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The First Reader read the following sentence from Science and Health: “God is the lawmaker, but He is not the author of barbarous codes” (p. 381).
