Correct reasoning heals back pain
A little over a year ago, I was weeding in my garden when I was stricken with a sharp pain in my lower back. I thought to myself, “I haven’t done anything in particular to bring this on.” Although it really hurt, I was slowly able to maneuver myself so that I could get to my feet and go inside.
For the next several weeks I was challenged with this intense pain. Although I was able to get everything accomplished that I needed to do, I was slowed down and had to do things gingerly. Quite often I had a hard time just sitting or lying down.
Meanwhile, I was praying to see through this sense of discord in my body and to realize the completeness of harmony, which God was seeing and expressing in me. I worked with Mary Baker Eddy’s answer to the question “What is man?” which begins on page 475 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, particularly where it reads, “He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas.” I’ve always liked this passage from Habakkuk: “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity” (1:13). I recall thinking about that and asking myself, “What is God seeing?” This led me to turn to God every time the pain flared up.
