I have worked with the homeless and also served for many years in a Christian Science Reading Room. One day a very well-dressed woman came into the Reading Room, accompanied by a homeless man.

The lady said: “I want to try to explain Christian Science to this man. This city doesn’t do enough for the homeless.” I said: “I agree with you. Most weeks I have a small ministry of sharing food and Christian Science with the homeless in Balboa Park.”

The woman stared intently at me for some moments, and then she gasped, “You’re the sandwich man!” Her story came out. She had been in prison for drug offenses, been released, couldn’t find work, had gotten back into drugs and became homeless. Then, one day—a day, she said, during which she had been contemplating suicide—I had given her a sandwich and a copy of the Sentinel, and I’d spoken to her of God’s love for all creation. I had suggested she go to a Christian Science Reading Room nearby, which she did. And after a full day of study there, she had a completely new view of herself.
