Freed from back pain
I was just finishing packing for a ten-day trip to help my mom care for a veritable sanctuary full of animals, when my husband’s back suddenly became extremely uncomfortable. He started limping and then had to crawl. He was supposed to care for our own animals and run the family business in my absence. I immediately turned to God with a silent, “Help!”
As the severity of the situation grew, I wondered if I could get out of taking my trip, as there seemed to be no way my husband could manage alone. I had never seen him incapacitated, and I felt fear creeping in. My husband asked me to pray for him, but despite my earnest prayers that day and night, he was not improved by morning and it was time for me to leave.
Four days earlier, we had attended an uplifting talk titled “Curing the incurable” given by a Christian Science lecturer. The evening before the lecture, during a preparatory meeting with members of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, the lecturer had shared specific ideas concerning our role as healers in our church, community, and world. Her promise of results from living these truths left no room for doubt, apathy, or lack of focus. She had encouraged us to study deeply passages from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, to imbibe the spirit of these passages, and to actively practice them. I’d taken this to heart.
