Husband and wife healed
One evening a few years ago when my husband, Jonathan, and I had just returned from dinner at a restaurant, he began coughing and was unable to stop. As we are both students of Christian Science, he was grateful to have me declare aloud the truth of his being as the image and likeness of God—entirely spiritual—and therefore whole and free. Within half an hour the coughing stopped, only to start again a short while later. Over the next few days other symptoms developed. Based on things we had heard in the media and from others over the years, we believed the condition to be pneumonia. Jonathan was strong in his desire to rely on God alone for healing, so we called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment.
Because of the severity of the challenge, we never left our home during these days, which stretched into a week. We spent much time in prayer, not only about the physical challenge but also about our marriage. It came to us that we had allowed ourselves to be distracted from the spiritual center of our marriage, in that our individual lives had become too full of activities and details, and we were no longer seeking God’s guidance about how to conduct our family life. We asked the practitioner to help us prayerfully address these issues.
After a week with no improvement for my husband and very little sleep for myself, I began to experience some of the same symptoms as my husband. We then agreed to go together to the Christian Science nursing facility in our area. When we arrived, we felt totally embraced in Love’s care. I felt the fear that had gripped me instantly lift, as the Christian Science nurses tenderly ministered to our needs. After the second night, we both felt free. We left the nursing wing and stayed on for a few days in the “spiritual renewal” wing of the facility, continuing to work with the practitioner to solidify the healing before returning home.
