Healing of painful gums
When I was on my way to Holland to celebrate my granddaughter’s birthday, I noticed that an area of my gums was tender to the touch. I immediately started praying, knowing that as the perfect child of the perfect God, I reflect health and wholeness, which are qualities of God, and that any material evidence to the contrary is untrue. Christian Science teaches that by holding and lifting our thought to the truth of our relation to God, we can experience a spiritual transformation in human consciousness, and that because disease is mental in nature, this change in consciousness adjusts anything that is inharmonious, resulting in healing.
The subject of the Christian Science Bible Lesson for that week was “Love,” and I resolved to turn away from the discordant situation and turn my thought to Love, a synonym for God. The Bible states, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear” (I John 4:18). As I prayed and held my thought to the presence and power of Love, I felt no fear that the six-day trip would be affected by any kind of indisposition—especially because I had experienced healing before from applying the truths of Christian Science.
I resolved to fill my consciousness with love and let my every thought, word, and act be loving. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes: “Divine Love is our hope, strength, and shield. We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and in heaven” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 113).
