Skin growth gone

Some time ago I noticed an area on my skin that looked abnormal. Over a period of years, it became a large, scary growth. I knew I needed to pray about it, and I did pray some, but it grew larger and was becoming uncomfortable.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds” (p. 4). Deep down, my prayer was to grow spiritually, and I knew that spiritual unfoldment was actually the only growth there could be—evidenced in my spiritual growth in obedience to God. I declared daily that the only growth happening within and around me was manifested in my growth in grace—“expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds.” I decided I would strive to express only those pure, Christlike qualities, and to see only those qualities in others, in every situation.

This endeavor corresponded beautifully with what I was already doing for my Christian Science students’ association assignment. We had been asked to live love daily, infusing our thought each morning with a Bible verse or a quote from Mrs. Eddy’s writings regarding living love. In the evening we were to write in a journal how we had felt and expressed God’s love that day. The aim was to truly understand God as Love, and to know ourselves as the spiritual expression of Love.
