Our son’s swift healing
Many years ago, when our son was about 15 months old, I took him to visit a friend and some relatives out of town. Sometime after we arrived, he began to show the symptoms of measles. A wave of fear swept over me. All my life I had relied on prayer in Christian Science for the answers to any kind of problem, so I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for the child and to calm my fear.
The practitioner sent me to pages 391–393 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which discuss contradicting error. Some points that particularly stood out to me were these: “Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them” (p. 391) and “Mentally contradict every complaint from the body, and rise to the true consciousness of Life as Love,—as all that is pure, and bearing the fruits of Spirit” (p. 391).
It was clear to me that disease is no part of my son’s true, spiritual being. Christian Science teaches that Truth is a synonym for God. God is infinite and good, and therefore there can be no error in God. So fear can and must be replaced in thought by what is true about God and His idea, man. I prayed with these truths as I held my son in my lap.
